Samsung is likely to soon lose its position as the world's largest buyer of OLED displays. As reported by the research firm Omdia and reported by DiGiTimes, Apple seems to be looking to buy about 169 million displays this year alone, which is a big increase over last year of 114.5 million panels.

The expected range of iPhone 13 phones is the main reason for this massive increase in demand for OLED. Like last year's iPhone 12 family, the iPhone 13 will use AMOLED displays, boosting overall adoption across Apple's phone camp to over 80%.

Samsung, meanwhile, is not expected to buy more AMOLED display panels than usual: by 2021, total figures for the South Korean-based handset maker are likely to hover around 157 million units, just over 152.3 million by 2020, but generally in the same parking ball.

Interestingly, the main supplier of OLED panels for Apple is Samsung Display, a subsidiary of Samsung Mobile that sits under the umbrella of Samsung Corporation. It is expected to provide 110 of Apple's 169 million panels, while the LG Display will sell 50 million. The Chinese supplier BOE will supply the other 9 million.

Many of these displays, especially those of the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, are expected to be ProMotion LTPO, similar to the display units found on the Apple Watch Series 4 and Series 5. These displays allow for variable refresh rates that make it dynamic. goes up or down depending on the context of use. In the case of higher-end iPhone 13 models, this will allow Apple to use refresh rates of up to 120Hz, but also always include displays that refresh less frequently and therefore consume less battery power.

In addition to the display panels, the iPhone 13 series is expected to have a smaller notch thanks to a more compact Face ID sensor and a more advanced ultra-wide-angle camera. Portrait video and astrophotography are also rumored to be cutting the iPhone 13.
